Digital Rights Management in 2008

March 10, 2008

In my old class blog, I have actually talked about DRM before. Last year this time, it was a breakthrough for DRM as some companies started to sell their digital content without any DRM protection.

One year later, how is the market like? iTunes continues to provide some tracks without DRM protection.  Within last year, the other online music seller “Amazon.com” also started their online music store and providing DRM-free music file. Earlier this year, Warner Music has gone DRM free as well.

One interesting thing that I heard a student today is ”I still prefer the illegal way”. I am not going to argue on this but I think put it simple it is highly relied on how do you value the piece of art that you are interested in.

If you can afford it, buy it. If not, it doesn’t mean that you have to enjoy it by all means. You will not rob a car if you don’t want to afford it. Why would you want to do that on digital files? Just because it is easier? We should think about it in depth.

However, it is highly related to your financial situation as well. Studying and working is different. When you leave college, start working, maybe your mind would change.

DVD the next is…Blu-Ray!

February 18, 2008

DVD is a very common medium that we are using everyday for movie, for data storage. Providing a capacity of 4GB and up, it is quite good already for our regular usage.

However, technology is something that never stops..

Do you own a PS3? If yes, then you must realize that they are using something called “Blu-Ray” as the game disc medium - the next generation of DVD.

If you pay attention to the market, Blu-Ray is not the only “next”. There is something called HD-DVD in the market competing with Blu-Ray too in order to become DVD the next, becoming the industry standard.

It has been so difficult to make a decision on either a Blu-Ray or HDDVD player for investment…however things got to change now.

Why? Because it is rumouring that Toshiba is stopping their HD-DVD production. That means what? That means the biggest HD-DVD supporter is giving up HD-DVD. In other words, Blu-Ray wins the format war…

I guess PS3/Sony players will be very happy with it..while XBOX360/Microsoft may need to think about developing a Blu-Ray drive now.. ;-)

New Beginning

February 15, 2008

Wish you all a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Semester begins, a bit early though. Thanks for the previous semester’s support. This semester I lose one of my beloved class B but add another new B class too. Although it is a bit sad (at least for me), but this is something beyond my control..I hope I don’t need to say like that.

Anyway, the first week has just passed for computer course. I am still a bit holiday mood and need some time to get back to track..haha I am looking forward another fabulous semester to study together~!

Sign up for the make up class

December 31, 2007

Hey, I am back in town again! How was your christmas time? Learnt from the Internet that Macau got a hot/warm christmas which is really bad. Is it the global warming?

I spent 7 days in Nanjing and Hangzhou to meet with some university representatives and had some cultural exchange activities, quite nice! I felt like a student in the tour group because I am the one of the few non-Ph.D holder…anyway it was a great experience for me!

Have you started already preparing your exam? Sometimes I really hate Christmas. It is the time for a student to study and for a teacher to do marking and prepare exam paper…who said that’s a holiday?? haha…let’s work hard…yeah, I know, I am late for your works’ marking…gimme some more time pls..

Don’t forget to sign up by email (Check ift mail) if you want to attend the make up section. Again, it is totally flexible, you make the choice. Instead of calling it make up class, it is more like a studying corner of INFO111.

Let me wish you again a happy new year in 2008!!

Joint Project

December 9, 2007

In fact, this is the first time I tried the join two projects together like this.

Surprisingly the course of mine and Frances are matching up perfectly. She’s teaching all the classes I am doing.

You know why there is such an arrangement? It was actually from a casual chat that we were complaining about the timing of lessons…then it inspired me an idea of combining works together!

I don’t know how Frances feels yet, but so far (yes, haven’t finished yet though) I am really impressed by many of your teams. Such quality of work in year 1 is very promising! I am sure some lecturers would agree with me too.

Do you like putting this two subjects together?

Disappointed

December 5, 2007

Did you study/prepare?

No, you didn’t..very disappointed with your class..whose fault?

Maybe it’s my fault..I am really sad for today. The worst Wednesday since September.

Don’t fool yourself…

December 5, 2007

Many peoples say that if the same test is on different timing, should alter a bit to make it less likely to leak around. To me, I don’t see it that way.

I see at least two immediate disadvantages in this kind of “collaboration”:

1) The donator will make the test unfair to himself (what is the benefit for you in doing that? friendship? oh…real friend helps friends but not spoils friends)

2) The receiver will not really learn, and will eventually fail in the situation when no special message leaks around (there will be no leaking news in the real world or at least in the final exam)

Well, ideally…I hope someone out there would understand this..
